My Mate Jack

Lucky Man

Heated Beat Collection Paperback

My Mate Jack

Will Barter’s been in love with his best mate Jack for as long as he can remember. They’ve shared everything: love, life, laughs, even Will’s first kiss. But Jack’s straight, and Will’s long-buried infatuation means nothing until their last summer together draws to a close.

Then one night, everything changes, but with Will bound for university in Leeds, and Jack for his dream DJ job in Ibiza, there’s no time to explore their blurred lines. Before long all that’s left are secrets, lies, and misunderstandings.

In the months that follow, anger and hurt overshadow fifteen years of friendship, and Will must dig deep to remember Jack is his mate… his best mate, and nothing matters more than that, right?

I can't say that I've read a story where one of the MCs was a DJ. The whole raver background (minus hardcore drugs) was actually really refreshing.

Will and Jack have been BFFs since they were 6 y.o. They did everything together. Drinking, smoking, raving, Will's first boy kiss (even though Jack is "straight"), & Jack's virginity. Then Will goes off to uni and Jack leaves for Ibiza to resume a career in the DJ business.

What was frustrating about the story was the lack of communication. These two had a lot of back and forth and hidden feelings, mainly on Jack's end. Because really, how could Will know what Jacks thinking, especially when Jack is a straight man? So Will continues to secretively pine for him.... While Jack is going crazy with his mixed up feelings.
I wanted to shake them and say man up!!

Fast forward a few years and a few fights and several emails later and Wills sitting on Jack's doorstep confused as ever.

Granted there's a lot of confusion for these two, it's also a very sweet friends-to-lovers story. I loved their friendship and easy comradery, which folded over easily into a loving partnership. Jack is an easy guy to fall for, so you can't blame Will for falling for his Best friend!

Will and Jack have been best friends since they were 6 years old. Will has never hidden that he was gay and Jack, who identifies as straight, has never cared. When they were about 15, Jack being the good best friend he is, offers to help Will by giving him his first kiss. Several years later, Jack confesses that he is still a virgin and doesn’t want to go into the next chapter of his life still holding on to his V-card, explains to Will that he really doesn't feel like being with a man would be any different than with a woman. Well, Will decides to return the “firsts” favor and the two of them sleep together.

The two of them go their separate ways with Will going to University and Jack pursuing his dream of being a DJ in Ibiza. Will has forever been in love with Jack, but knows that Jack is not gay. Little does he know that Jack has also been holding a candle for him.
It takes a lot for these two to get their stuff together to finally come clean with each other. But when they do it is super sweet.

I will tell you the angst factor of this book is pretty high, but all in all I did enjoy it.

I give this book 4 sweet stars.

Lucky Man

As a diehard music fan, a dirty, smoky gig is Vice Squad Detective Danny Jones’s idea of heaven. While watching one of the most popular bands in Northern England, the sight of gorgeous rock star Finn McGovern changes his life forever.

Beneath the tattoos and leather jacket, Finn is kind and sweet, but when he confesses a dark secret to Danny, it tests their fledgling bond. Danny digs deep to accept Finn, but before long, a terrifying trail of death threatens to tear them apart before they’ve even got started.

A monster is killing prostitutes on Danny’s patch, and when a dead girl turns up too close to home, Danny discovers a heartbreaking link between the girl and his bright new life with Finn, a life he’ll do anything to protect.

What can I say about this book?

I will say Garret can take an affliction and make it seem like she's the one that's going through it,which then comes across like you're the one going through it lol. Finn has an uncommon disorder, and I think Garret did such a great job with it (just like Jake in Misfits).

Finn's in a band called Lamps, and Danny decided to go out with a friend to see the show. Danny decided to stay at the bar for a bit and has his first encounter with Finn. Uou can feel the chemistry between the two right off.

What I love most about this is, Finn's band is an independent band, so it isn't all glitz, glamour, raging adoring fans. I can't read those books, they kind of make me feel anxious, much like Finn and crowds.

Danny is a quiet kind of guy, and a Vice Detective who gets landed with a case of a possible serial killer. Not only is he going through that, but he's also coming to terms with Finn and his "issue". I think he handles it all pretty well, considering. I also like that Finn told him about it straight away. That can't be an easy thing to admit to someone.

Another aspect I really dug was, yes they hit it off right away, but there were also some obstacles that they had to go through before really coming together. It wasn't a story just about them, but as individuals as well, Danny with his case and Finn with his music and health. It's like once they reached that end goal and learned more about each other (they both seemed mystified by the other) then they could really BE together.

I think these two were just so sweet and I really enjoyed their story, waaay more than I thought I would. 4.5*

Garrett has done it again!!! Finn in the singer in one of  Northern England's most popular indie bands, the Lamps, and he also happens to be schizophrenic. Danny is a police detective needing a little down time from an intense murder investigation.
The Lamps are playing at a local venue and Danny is there to take his mind off things and relax as best he can. He never would have imagined he would end up in the sexy singers bed bed.
Finn has a hard time with relationships because of his mental illness, but the connection he felt with Danny has him wanting to try. Finn tells Danny after their first date after the hookup wanting to be upfront as to not get to invested in anything incase Danny wants no part of him due to his illness.
Danny is a little taken back by Finns illness, but he doesn't care. However things don’t go as smoothly and there is a little breakdown in communication, but it doesn't take long for them to get back on track.
There are some ups and downs with these two and once they work through everything they end up with something amazing.
The only thing I can say that would have made this story better is if there was more of it. I would have loved for this to have been
I give this book 4.75 amazing stars.
