Blog Tour & Giveaway ~ Patchwork Paradise by Indra Vaughn

ebook275 pages
Expected publication: March 28th 2016 by Riptide Publishing

Oliver and Samuel’s relationship is fairy-tale perfect. They share a gorgeous house in Antwerp, go out with their friends every weekend, and count down the days to their dream wedding. But their happy ending is shattered one late night, and just like that, Ollie is left bereft and alone.

The months that follow are long and dark, but slowly Ollie emerges from his grief. He even braves the waters of online dating, though deep down he doesn’t believe he can find that connection again. He doesn’t think to look for love right in front of him: his bisexual friend Thomas, the gentle giant with a kind heart and sad eyes who’s wanted him all along.

When Thomas suddenly discovers he has a son who needs him, he’s ill prepared. Ollie opens up his house—Sam’s house—and lets them in. Ollie doesn’t know what scares him more: the responsibility of caring for a baby, or the way Thomas is steadily winning his heart. It will take all the courage he has to discover whether or not fairy tales can happen for real.

Excerpt

Mac turned. Trelain rocked what he guessed would be called a dressing gown. It was a long robe, but more substantial than a bathrobe, and clearly made of silk. Far from an English country-house paisley, this was in some watercolor print of aqua and gold. I must be allergic to silk because, man, it is tough to breathe. In that get-up, the person in front of him could be a woman, and a very beautiful one at that. The face was a really handsome guy, but the golden hair softened everything. Jeez, it played with his mind.

“Mac?”

Shit. He’d been staring. “Yeah. Here’s the stuff.” He pulled the little bottle from his jacket pocket where he’d stashed it in the restaurant.

Trelain took it and walked toward the kitchen, putting the analgesic in his robe pocket. “Can’t I tempt you with something more interesting than water? Some champagne, perhaps?” He didn’t wait for an answer—just removed the foil on the bottle and opened the cage with the precise six turns. Mac knew that piece of erudite trivia from the story he’d done on champagne last year. Trelain applied a thumb to the cork and, pop, it opened with the soft sound that indicated he knew what he was doing and hadn’t damaged the wine. He poured into the sides of two flutes and held one out to Mac. “Come sit.”

Trelain installed himself on the couch, set down his glass, pulled the little bottle from his pocket and opened it. He sniffed tentatively.

Mac laughed. “It won’t bite, I promise. Just drip some into your palm and then apply it to the area that hurts. I’d better get a washcloth so you can wipe clean afterward.” He walked to the kitchenette, found a clean towel, wet it then crossed to the chair. Trelain dropped a little of the blue liquid with the strong cinnamon smell into his long, slender hand. He sniffed again, raised a leg onto the couch, and uncovered himself up to his thigh. Shee-it. He’d seen his parents’ feet and legs thousands of times, but this felt…intimate. Trelain’s feet were heavily callused, the toes pushed together as only a true dancer’s could be. And the leg? It looked more like something carved from marble than from flesh. Sculpted, hard as stone.

Trelain began to run the scented liquid over the back of his calf and up onto his thigh. Jesus, he was playing patty-cake. “No, dig in. Really work it into the muscles.”

Trelain dug in for a couple of strokes but then pulled back his hands and shook them. Yeah, massaging marble couldn’t be easy. But crap, his leg hurt, and the magic blue stuff could help if he just did it right. Mac shook his head. “That’s not going to get the job done.”

“Sorry. I’m spoiled. I have a masseuse that travels with the company.”

In frustration, Mac rose and sat beside the man on the couch, handing him the damp towel. He grabbed the bottle from the table and dotted some of the warming liquid into his palm. “Here, let me.” He grabbed the dancer’s foot, pulled it into his lap, and began rubbing the carved muscle of Trelain’s leg with deep, penetrating strokes. “Like this.” One stroke, and he knew this was not his father. In fact, it was a hell of a mistake.

The beautiful head hit the back of the couch. “Chyort! That feels incredible.” Trelain moaned. Mac tried to pretend he didn’t feel the satin texture of that skin, like silk over steel.

Mac cleared his throat. “You, uh, really have to dig in, this way.” Mac’s fingers pushed into hard muscle, the liquid warming his fingers. Yeah, it wasn’t his fingers he was worried about. Why was he doing this?

Trelain moaned luxuriously, his head moving back and forth against the couch. That wasn’t all that was moving. Holy shit. This wasn’t happening. The front of the silk robe rose like an expensive tent. Wasn’t the guy wearing any underwear under that thing?

He felt like a damned snake charmer. He couldn’t look away or stop doing the thing making that serpent rise. He just kept rubbing. Trelain’s eyes stayed closed. Most guys would make a joke. He said nothing.

Excerpt:

Twenty-one years ago…

“Closed doors, I hate closed doors. Why don’t I have the power to see through them? That, at least, would be

a useful ability.” Three-hundred-year-old floorboards creaked as Gregory Thanet paced the galleried landing of

Wenlock House. He walked up and down past three doors, each fashioned from heavy oak and furnished with black

iron hinges and handles. Two stood ajar, revealing hints of unoccupied bedrooms, but the third was firmly closed, a

solid barrier to unwanted intrusion and the cause of Gregory’s current frustration.

“For goodness’ sake, Gregory, you’re wearing out the carpet. Be still.” Gregory’s companion leaned against

the gallery rail and gave him an exasperated look.

Gregory paused his march briefly, shot a glare at the woman but then resumed his pacing with a grunt.

“Leave me be, woman, I’ll be still when we know that everything is as it should be.”

“Nature moves at her own pace, you know that. There’s no changing it—nor should we. What will be will

be.”

“Stop trying to sound like some wise and ancient soothsayer, Agatha. You’re not helping and it doesn’t suit

you. The kid is a week late already—you’d think he would be keen to greet the world by now. When he’s grown I’ll

remember that he kept me up half the night. I’m sure I’ll get plenty of opportunities for revenge when he’s older.”

Gregory stopped and folded his arms across his chest.

“I might not be able to see the future, Gregory Thanet, but even a complete idiot could have predicted that my

grandson would arrive today.”

Gregory examined his companion. Agatha looked tired. Her skin was quite smooth, marred only by a few

laughter lines around her hazel eyes, eyes that still sparkled with warmth and intelligence. Her silver hair was swept

smoothly back and fastened with a comb, intricately fashioned from beaten copper. She remained an attractive

woman, who must have possessed great beauty in her youth, but she looked paler than usual and she rested her

weight against the banister rather than standing in her usual ramrod-straight stance.

Gregory experienced a rare pang of guilt that he might be adding to his friend’s worries. “All Hallows’ Eve.

There’s a lot of power in the air right now.”

Agatha cocked her head to one side and closed her eyes as if listening to sounds that only she could hear. “My

grandson will be with us soon and there is little that you or I can do to change the course of his destiny.” For a

moment, a worried frown creased her forehead. “It is not certain that he will inherit the gift.”

Gregory sighed. “In this, you deceive yourself, Agatha. The calling has skipped a generation. History dictates

that the next born will be unusually powerful and that power will be magnified even further in a male child.”

“There has been no warlock in my family line for over five hundred years, only witches. Why are you so

convinced that it will change now? We know of only three others living, Gregory. You, Symeon Malus and

Constantine De Vries. It would be a chance in a billion.”

Gregory scratched the tip of his long nose. “I should have bought a lottery ticket then. All the portents point

to it, the date alone… It is time. Time the triangle became a square.”

“I’m not sure Symeon Malus will ever be part of that square,” Agatha said. “I don’t see him as the

cornerstone of anything with value or integrity.”

“True, and if the child is born with the power, you and I will need to ensure that Symeon’s gaze remains

elsewhere.” Gregory shivered. “I swear to the goddess, this country is the dampest place on earth. It’s all right for

you, Agatha, you live in the second dampest place on the planet. You’re used to groping through fog. I want to get

back to Florida. I need to—before I develop trench foot.”

“Pah. What you really want is to get back to Coryn. You’re a ship without an anchor when the two of you are

apart. He could have come to see the child too, you know.” Agatha grabbed a stray hair and pushed it back into a

restraining grip.

“Coryn hates airplanes, you know that. I would never ask him to fly across the pond unless it was a life or

death situation.”

“If it were, you wouldn’t have to ask him.”

“He reckons that if men were designed to fly through the air, then human cannonball would be a much more

popular career choice.”

Agatha snorted. “I think his phobia is a myth. He just uses it as an excuse to get a few days’ break from

your—” She whistled and twiddled her fingers in the air.

Gregory rolled his eyes. “Twiddling your fingers that way will get you turned into an aardvark. It takes

practice to bend your digits into shapes imbued with power. After thirty-two years together, Coryn is more than

capable of dealing with my—” He whistled. “As you so delicately put it.”

Agatha snorted. “Men with magic! Whoever the hell thought that would be a good idea was seriously

damaged.” She shook her head slowly.

Gregory grinned and waggled a silver eyebrow.

The mewling cry of a newborn sounded from behind the closed bedroom door, and Agatha allowed her lips to

curve into a smile.

“Well, it seems the waiting is over. I have a grandchild—and, from the sound of that bellowing, he’s a fine,

healthy boy.”

“About damned time.” Gregory grouched. He still smiled right along with Agatha.

Agatha crossed the landing and knocked softly on the door, which soon swung open to admit her. Gregory

followed her inside, pushing down his excitement.

The bedroom was bathed in the cool light of a new dawn. The soft green of the walls seemed to shimmer and

the wooden floor was burnished with gold. Gregory looked around in wonder, then dragged his gaze back to the bed.

“Lyssa, James—congratulations, my dears!” Agatha clapped her hands together in delight as she walked over

to the bed.

Gregory hung back a little, giving her the privilege of first viewing.

Agatha’s daughter, Lyssa, sat up in bed propped against a mound of pillows. She was pale, her eyes

shadowed in the purple of exhaustion, but still she glowed with radiant happiness. A small bundle wrapped in a pale

blue blanket rested in her arms. Her husband, James, sat nervously on the edge of the mattress, looking utterly shell-

shocked but delighted as the midwife fussed around them.

Lyssa held the baby out to her mother with a smile. “His name is Evrain. Evrain James Brookes. Hold him,

Mum, isn’t he beautiful?”

Gregory held his breath as Agatha reached for the small bundle and cradled the child in her arms. She pushed

the blanket back from the baby’s head, and a mop of thick black hair was revealed, sticking out in all directions.

“He is absolutely gorgeous, darling. Didn’t you both do well!” Agatha stroked the child’s hair.

Gregory moved in closer. Tiny fists punched at the air, so Gregory offered the boy his own hand.

Immediately, the baby grabbed hold, wrapping his fingers around Gregory’s offering with surprising strength.

Gregory grinned at Agatha in delight, then looked back to the baby. His eyes were the dark blue of every newborn

but, as Gregory focused his senses on the child, he could see that they would become dark green. Just a shade deeper

than his own.

Cooing softly, Agatha muttered a lilting incantation and rocked the baby gently. To Lyssa and James, the

song probably sounded like a lullaby, but Gregory knew a spell when he heard one. Tiny eyelids closed and the baby

slept. Gregory’s finger was released. After a few more minutes of cuddling, Agatha reluctantly returned the baby to

his parents.

Excerpt

(From: Territory of Angels)

Anifiel watched him steadily. "What was this joke?"

Ryan swallowed hard. "We were looking at a tattoo parlor. He saw someone with a piercing. A nipple piercing. When I showed him mine, he acted like he wanted one, too."

Golden brows stabbed together. "What is a nipple piercing?"

Ryan stopped breathing for a second. Oh, no. "It's—it's when you put jewelry through your, um, nipple." He could feel himself blushing furiously at the thought of Anifiel imagining what his nipple looked like.

"You say you have this? Show me."

Ryan shook his head and wrapped an arm around his chest. "No."

He yelped when Anifiel dropped on him without warning, pinning him on his back to the cloud.

"Get off me!" Ryan gasped as he tried to buck the Angel off.

Heavy limbs effectively brought his thrashing to an end. Panting, Ryan found himself trapped with his wrists above his head in one of Anifiel's hands. The Angel's other hand, to his horror, tugged at the neck of Ryan's tunic.

"What are you doing?" Ryan asked, incredulous.

Anifiel ignored him, frowning as he seemed to realize he could not lower Ryan's tunic while his arms were held above his head. "My apologies," he muttered with that same lack of sincerity as earlier. Ryan twitched as Anifiel grabbed hold of the neck of his tunic and simply ripped through it.

Ryan stared up at Anifiel, wide-eyed at what he'd done. This was his fantasy, and yet the reality scared him down to his toes. To be this vulnerable to the Commander was both the hottest experience of Ryan's life (and death) and the most terrifying.

The Angel's green eyes rounded for a split second as they latched onto the silver hoop adorning Ryan's chest.

"This is what Finnian desired?" Anifiel looked dumbfounded. "Why would he want this?"

In a voice laced with nerves, Ryan told him. "He thought it was pretty. And when I told him that it feels good, he was curious about that, too."

Green eyes flicked up to him. "It feels good? In what way?" Without waiting for an answer, Anifiel flicked the ring with his index finger.

Ryan gasped loudly and pushed his hips up. He'd never reacted this intensely to someone touching the ring, but something about the fact that it was Anifiel—the fear of being hurt by him, maybe—made Ryan's cock surge to a full erection.

"Get off!" he all but yelled, panicking. "Get off me!"

"Human lusts," Anifiel said coldly, eyes narrowing to slits. "Always it is about your corruption. Is this how you seduced my consort? By offering him pleasure of this sort? Did you give him an example of how it would be?"

Ryan shook his head vehemently. He needed Anifiel to get off him. The Angel's pelvis was pressed against his own and it was all Ryan could do not to pump against him and find relief for his throbbing cock. It was bad enough that Anifiel had aroused him and could feel it. But now Ryan had to fight his own body's demand for more than that.

"Get off," he pleaded. "Please, Anifiel."

Something thick and drugging moved through Ryan's veins. His inhibitions began to dissolve like mist, replaced by a growing desire. He felt strange, and yet not bad, as if he'd just taken a hit of Ecstasy. In fact, it began to feel incredible…He rolled his hips up into Anifiel's and groaned at the beautiful friction against his cock. Oh, yes.

"What are you doing down there?" Anifiel asked. "Why do you rub against me so?"

Ryan was in no state of mind to be giving lessons. "Because it…feels good," he moaned.

"This is what Finnian asked me for," Anifiel murmured. Even through the lusty fog enveloping his brain, Ryan heard the wonder and resentment vying for dominance within Anifiel. "He wanted to make love as you humans do. He was dissatisfied with me because of you!" The Angel gripped Ryan by the hair. "Show me your filthy human lust."

Blog Tour & Giveaway Broken by Nicola Haken

Title: Broken
Author: Nicola Haken
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 29, 2016

When Theodore Davenport decides to switch his mundane job for a career, he walks into Holden House Publishing with enthusiasm and determination to succeed. As he settles into his new role, makes new friends, and dreams of making it to the top, everything is going to plan. Until he meets James Holden, CEO of Holden House. James Holden hasn’t been able to stop thinking about his encounter with the timid man he met in a club bathroom last week, and when he discovers the one haunting his dreams is an employee, he can’t seem to stop himself from pursuing him. Just a little fun - that’s what James tells himself. He can’t afford to care for someone who can never reciprocate, not once they find out who he really is. James believes nobody deserves the burden of being attached to him. He’s a complicated man. Damaged. Difficult. Demanding. Broken. Is Theodore strong enough to confront James’ demons? More importantly, is James? (M/M romance. Not suitable for readers under 18 years of age due to language and sexual content. ***Please note*** This book contains scenes of self harm, mental illness and suicidal ideation which may pose as a trigger, or be uncomfortable for some readers.)

“Broken is truly a remarkable book. I was blown away by it, by the raw and sincere way Ms. Haken took these men through the roller coaster of living with unrelenting demons. And now, as I sit here wondering if I have to courage to post this review, all I can think about is how far into my heart Theo and James have embedded themselves--and how I hope they never leave. I think it might be too hard to say goodbye...although maybe not as hard as it was find the words that I hope compel you to read this breathtaking book.” ~ Beth, Give Me Books
“A stunning but achingly painful read” ~ Author Sloane Kennedy
“This is an amazing book full of so much raw emotion that it gripped me and wouldn't let up. I felt like I was watching a movie in my head and I wanted to just jump in the book and give James a huge hug. Lots of FEELz in this book.. both good and bad.” ~ Alpha Book Club

Reviews:

First let me start with that cover. What a gorgeous piece of art. It embodies what this book "feels" like.

Going into this, I knew it was going to be sad. So, the whole t ok me reading it I was just guessing as to what was going on (of course I guessed right) and just waiting for that show to drop. I gotta say, when it happened though, i didn't break down like I expected to. I don't know if it was because I was more concerned with Theodore. Being in his head and going through his motions felt real. The shock, the doubt, the blame, all something someone really going through that would have felt.

I thought Theo handled everything like a champion though. He really is a brave character. Even after his first initial anger, he realizes this isn't about him and it really brought things in to perspective. My heart can't help but bleed for James. I actually didn't break down until James was "recovering". I think that's when we stopped being numb and started feeling again.

I loved all these characters. Tess, Mas, Tom, Isobel, & Stacey. They all played vital role in support and I thought they were well executed. Even Mike the Moron, you can't help but hate him. Why he still had a job is beyond me.

While I loved this story and thought it was beautiful, I couldn't help but feel a few moments were over the top lovey-dovey. Perhaps for Theodore it may have been in character, but for James it didn't feel right, though I LOVED his playfulness. Singing in the car had me smiling wide, goofy bastard.

So to conclude my thoughts, I give this heartwarming, eye opening story a 4.25*

I don't even know where to start!! This book touched me on so many levels. I loved all the characters, well except for Moron Mike and James' mother...I kinda hated them. I could feel James' pain, hear every thought...because I have felt them and heard them myself. Theodore was so patient with James, he was just perfect!! To all the "broken", we all have anchors in our lives, when you feel like you're drifting...let them help bring you back to shore.

I give this book 4.75 amazing stars.

Nicola lives in Rochdale, England with her husband and four children (six if you include the dog and cat!) She is the author the author of the m/m romance Souls of the Knight series, and is currently working on a standalone with new boys, James and Theo, due for release early 2016. When she is not busy playing with her imaginary book friends (or talking about them with real life friends!) she can usually be found carrying out her ordinary mum/housewife/all round slave duties. Oh, and if the kids ever ask, she moonlights as the Pink Power Ranger while they're sleeping...
